The White Horse or Headless Indian

From the colony times till nowadays, everybody is talking about the strange legend of a HEADLESS INDIAN riding THE WHITE HORSE that made their silent appearances at midnight.

This appearance is prediction of tragedy and blood in the population. When some horrific murder happens, somebody always assures that the last night saw the headless Indian riding with his white horse for some deserted street of Las Tunas city.

The accident of greater magnitude whish was attributed to the adventure of Headless Indian happened on July 12 of 1945, when the central train coming from Havana and going to Santiago de Cuba had a mechanical problem in its controls system and it went off the rails when it was level with the current sawmill “Libertad”, at that time Lima’s property, one of the wealthiest families in the town.

That event that touched to the society of Las Tunas city and extended to the whole country, provoked more than 30 deaths and a similar number of injured, rescued them of an iron, wood and human bodies mixture made for wagons when crashed against the steam locomotive dragging them.

The causes were clear, more than the hundreds of people met in the surroundings of the catastrophe listened a comment that, immediately, went round district: "Headless Indian with white horse went past round here”.

The improving of the cultural standard of the town after the victory of the Cuban revolution in 1959 allowed the reasoning about the true causes of the events and today the new generations practically they don't know that history.

The legend of Headless Indian riding the White Horse, became city heritage and it did spread generation in generation until our days, although at the present time very few people remember to Headless Indian riding The White Horse; in fact it was a folkloric element and, a sample of lack of culture that characterized, not just this region, but also the whole country.

Today in honor to this legend Las Tunas city heritage, a mural has been placed in one of the interior walls of the hotel "The Tunas" that it reflects this traditional history.
